When it comes to men’s knitwear, some styles have been available for decades. In fact some styles have been worn for well over a hundred years. Many of these styles of pullovers were designed to be used for outdoor work.
A great example of this is the mariner’s sweater. These jumpers had to be made from high quality dense wool to ensure that the wearer stayed dry. They were made to allow freedom of movement. They were a garment that was very much fit for purpose and one that was worn by many people who worked outside not just by those who worked in the fishing industry.
However, with the introduction of modern synthetic fabrics new garments were produced for outdoor workers. They were lighter, and easier to care for, so sales of traditional knitwear began to tail off in the 60s and 70s. Fortunately, there was still some demand, so some of the older well established firms like Swanndri managed to stay in business despite falling sales.
Today, many of the older firms that still make high quality traditional knitwear have found new markets and are once again prospering. Sales of good quality sweaters, hats and gloves are growing again. Modern production techniques have produced pure wool thread that does not shrink and is easy to care for. The fact that these jumpers look good and fit in with a range of styles means that more men are once again choosing to buy from those firms who make traditional knitwear to a high standard.
