It seems to be the case that no matter which shop you visit, the clothes and styles are identical to each other. Sometimes, it would be nice to have something a little different, a little more individual to wear. Who wants to look the same as everyone else, after all?
With this thought in mind, I recently started to purchase clothes which have been made by hand. I find that both the quality of the material and the style itself tends to be of a better quality. I am not alone in doing so – there is a trend for either purchasing handmade clothes or making them yourself in my neck of the woods.
There’s something nice about the idea. Firstly, from an ethical point of view, you know where your clothes are coming from. Secondly, you may well be supporting a local artist when you buy handmade clothes. Then there’s the time and care that has been put into the creation process. Unlike mass produced items, you are sure that someone has dedicated their day to producing a decent piece.
Perhaps it’s a result of recent economic downturn. People are trying to save money where they can and hence a do-it-yourself attitude has developed throughout the nation. Whilst buying handmade wear isn’t exactly sewing the fabric yourself, it’s certainly a step away from the commercial giants which dominate the clothing landscape.
Going handmade offers wearers a better chance of being able to express themselves. Chances are that you will find one-off pieces, so you can’t possibly look the same as anyone else. Having that freedom, without actually making the clothes yourself, is great fun. Should you be new to the handmade look, a good way to find out whether it is for you is to invest in clothes for a special occasion, to see if you like what you find.
A word of warning: If you are going to go down the handmade route, you must check the quality of the clothes you buy. Online, you may do so by studying the pictures carefully or ringing the company for details. In the shop, check for durability by inspecting the quality of the stitching and how secure buttons and zips feel. Shop owners should be happy for you to do so. If they are not, you may wish to reconsider your purchase.
There are many websites which offers a vibrant range of handmade shoes and clothing. Their style is fashion-forward and unique. With a beautiful selection of lace-up boots in an array of colours, from tan to turquoise blue, there is a boot to suit every wearer. I love using their website to find unusual and unique designs to complement the rest of my outfit. This season, I will be investing in a pair of gorgeous chocolate brown leather boots and a belt skirt, to follow the leather trend. Fabulous!
